Official Simplenote Client Finally Arrives On Android

Considering very good and strong user base of Simplenote - a no frills note taking service that has been acquired in January by WordPress owner Automattic - it sounds surprising that there wasn’t the state Android app for it, well - until recently! Today marks the launch of Simplenote at Google Play Store, and like its iOS and other supported versions, the app is completely free and embraces the same minimalism it’s well-regarded for. For those not really acquainted with the service, Simplenote enables you to take plain text notes and make them all synced via the cloud. That means it is possible to jot down something on the iPhone and possess it accessible on your Android or Kindle device near-instantly. The biggest difference between Simplenote and services like Evernote would be that the latter supports capturing rich, multimedia information, which makes it clunky, while Simplenote remains super-fast by supporting only plain text notes. We’ve covered many third-party clients to the service in the past such as Flick Note and Tomboy , however the official Android app looks much, far better and works great at what it does. Lets take particular notice.

Many note taking apps we encounter today, or perhaps those that have been known for a while, require users to sign up for your service. That’s not the case with Simplenote, as you can get started by it right away. Though naturally, you may be required to logon with your Simplenote account so that you can synchronize and edit your notes across other platforms. When launched, Simplenote presents a barebones home screen that lets you sign in for your requirements, or register if you don’t currently have one. The app’s UI comprises of a notes list, as well as search and add note buttons towards the top.

Speaking of notes, you are able to jot down almost anything that’s plain text - no fancy photos or video attachments here that can slow things down. You can also assign tags to the important points to keep them well-organized and easily accessible. That said, notes can even be pinned at the very top of the notes list by tapping the minuscule radio button. Furthermore, the app permits you to share notes via other installed apps including Facebook, Gmail, Twitter etc.

Tapping ‘All Notes’ within the upper-left corner of home screen introduces the sidebar, which allows you to filter notes via tags, along with navigate to deleted notes. Tags may also be customized in addition to deleted from your menu. The Settings screen of Simplenote is just not overloaded with configuration options, and only enables you to toggle Condensed note (which basically disables note excerpts on home screen), as well as choose the sort order for your notes list, and sign from your account.
