Chase Jarvis is often a well-known name among photographers, particularly the Nikonians. Jarvis has shot for a few of the biggest names inside corporate world including Apple, Volvo, Nike, Microsoft, Red Bull, Honda, and Polaroid. Today, Jarvis provides us some tips on how to take aerial photographs from the inside of a helicopter, an approach to photographing that they highly recommends:


Jarvis’s Tips for Aerial Photography:


  • Never walk throughout the tail end with the helicopter



  • Always be sure to and your gear is safely secured to the helicopter



  • Bring multiple cameras to avoid switching lenses



  • Use memory cards with numerous storage space to avoid switching them out



  • Don’t utilize a lens hood mainly because it will be harder to hand-hold the digital camera and may are removed during flight



  • Sit for a passing fancy side because the pilot so you are viewing exactly the same scene which enable it to communicate easier



  • Shoot in a very high shutter speed (at least 1/1000th) to overcome camera shake

Always sit on a single side since the pilot so that you can are both looking at exactly the same thing

Jarvis’s biggest tip is to always listen on the pilot. They’re experienced at what they do, plus they know far more that you will. So always focus on what your pilot says as he/she is following safety procedures.


“Generally speaking, when we shoot from the helicopter, you shoot using the doors off. So call ahead, it sounds like a big deal, but it’s really not. It’s something they're able to do in just minutes.”
