How to Call Phones From Your Android Tablet

Love your Android tablet, but wish it might make calls? Stop wishing: all you need is the right software. You’ll be making calls to phone lines and cellphones in no time (however it probably won’t be free).

Whether you don’t own a mobile phone or simply don’t desire to put down one device to post another, it is usually useful to call regular phones on your tablet. After all: many tablets currently have a built-in microphone and speakers. Which software packages are right for the work? Good question. Let’s check out some options.

I made calls with all the tablet, without having a headset, and ultizing a combination mic/headphones I previously used with my phone. No configuration was needed no matter what.

You knew it had been going to appear, so I might get it off the beaten track. Microsoft’s Skype is the web’s most popular telephone replacement, and unlike most Microsoft products is accessible on every platform - Android included. The Android app for Skype was recently refreshed, so if you recall this app being slow and ugly it might be time for the second look:

How’s the decision quality? If you’re familar with Skype do you know what to expect: decent calls provided your Internet access is fast enough. There will, naturally, be occasional glitches, but there’s few people like going lag and individuals sound real.

As for cost, that relies. Subscriptions offer you unlimited calls to a particular locations - $2.99 30 days, by way of example, means you'll be able to call unlimited numbers inside the USA and Canada. But you can also pay each minute. Here’s what the rates can be like for that:

  • USA/Canada: 2.3 cents/minute

  • France, Mobile: 35 cents/minute

  • Germany, Mobile: 25.3 cents/minute

  • India: 9.2 cents/minute

Note the rates are pay-as-you go; you will find subscription rates for many regions. Also be aware that calling landlines will be less than mobile. See all rates here.

Skype offers great value if you subscribe - unlimited calling to the country to have an affordable subscription. For one-off calls, though, may possibly not be the best value. Test it out yourself, though: download Skype for Android and present it a spin.

Google Voice is weird. After a hype-filled launch last year, Google did actually largely overlook this service - which supplies US users with the online telephone number that connects to a few phones, while providing online SMS and voicemail.

There’s not even a simple way to make a phone call at - simply a button which will connect various other phone using the number you type. Users will make calls, but need to do so in Gmail or Google Hangouts for reasons uknown.

What? Google claims the future of the service is full integration with Google Hangouts, and that’s probably to get the best - it’s an extraordinary service with out a user-friendly interface.

As there's a chance you're able to guess, the official Voice app can’t call someone on a tablet - it depends on conventional phone lines to achieve that. There are, however, third party services that use Voice to call people - and Talkatone is amongst the popular.

Sign in utilizing your Google account and you’ll have a very standard phone interface:

From here you'll be able to call your contacts or dial several. Call quality was pretty good in my tests, though there was a considerable delay.

The huge advantage here is price: calls and texts to the USA and Canada have the freedom from within the USA. Check out other rates on Google’s rates page, but here’s an instant rundown of a few major countries:

  • France, mobile: 10 cents/minute

  • Germany, mobile: 10 cents/minute

  • India, mobile: 2 cents/minute

Check out Google’s complete list of call rates should you’re curious. The cost savings over Skype are significant, but note that you'll find no subscription rates for heavy callers. Google users could also use Hangouts to make free voice and video calls with Hangouts users, in spite of which country they’re in - just like Skype.

Skype and Google are some of the big two in terms of VoiP, but they’re only one players - not by a long shot. Fring’s mobile-first push in the space was quick, ultimately because of its group calling features. Google’s Hangouts makes that less unique, but there’s still a loyal base of Fring users around. Read a little more about Fring to discover what it’s information on.

Fring comes with a service for calling regular phones, called Fringout. Audio quality is decent, though users have reported echoes when compared with Skype. Rates are reasonable, albeit disparate:

  • USA (mainland): 1.2 cents/minute

  • Canada: 0.7 cents/minute

  • France, mobile: 33.2 cents/minute

  • Germany, mobile: 8.5 cents/minute

  • India: 2.9 cents/minute

Prices are competitive for some countries; less to others. Check out Fring’s rates to learn more to do with rates, or install Fring on Google Play and discover for yourself how well it works.

One More Thing…

Note that, depending on your tablet, call quality could be iffy as a result of hardware limitations. If people complain about not hearing you take into account looking into combination microphone/headphones or perhaps a bluetooth headset.

After all, your tablet isn’t exactly meant to rest beside your mind as you talk in it. Still, being capable to use the tablet to call people is nice. Which service does one use because of this? Let me know within the comments below.
