A Quick Tour Of The Leap Motion Touchless Input Device

Novelty fades quickly. While we are getting to be used to touch screens, the most up-to-date fad are touch-less interfaces. Game consoles have long embraced natural interaction and also your webcam can detect motion and gestures rather. Right now the 1st application driven gesture recognition devices form of hosting computers are showing up in the market, such as the Leap Motion.

The Leap Motion Controller is often a novel user interface device for Windows and Mac. It allows you to control your pc through finger gestures painted into the air across the small device. Leap Motion intentions to make interaction using the computer and software more natural. In this article I will take you through the initial setup, expose you to the Leap Motion’s app store, and generally explore how intuitive and useful this gadget actually is.

The Leap Motion is available for $79.99 plus tax and shipping over the Leap Motion Store. And this 's what you will receive:

From there you may be directed straight to Airspace, the Leap Motion’s home screen and marketplace. To enter, you initially need to create your account. Before you are let on your Airspace Home screen, the place where your entire apps are listed, you will be taken with an orientation. Here you will complete several demonstration exercises to familiarize yourself while using Leap Motion Controller.

Amazingly, the Leap Motion Controller can detect single fingers, all 10 of these.

After you completed the orientation, you will be dropped off on the Airspace Home screen. Here you'll find a number of default apps, including Google Earth, plus a link to the Airspace Store. The store will launch in your default browser.

The the very next time you boot your pc and want to play with the Leap Motion, will come your way the Airspace Home screen from the green bar in your system tray. The bar turns up whenever the Leap Motion Controller is connected for your computer capable to go. Right-click into it and select Launch Airspace. Should there be a problem using the controller, the bar changes its color and display a reminder.

Leap Motion worked closely with developers to make sure a selection of cool apps can be available at launch. You could say they succeeded because Airspace store contains a large number of apps in the handful of categories, including creative tools, education, games, science, and productivity and utilities. However, few apps cost nothing.

Leap Motion Airspace Apps

When you get an app, it'll immediately appear as downloading on the Airspace Home screen.

Most with the free apps are cute proof-of-concept or training apps, as an example VIZ.it (Mac), with which you can draw patterns or play Cut the Rope, a physics game containing won several game awards on other platforms, but using the Leap Motion it mainly lets you practice precise finger movements.

My favorite non-game app is Corel’s Painter Freestyle. The app was easy to control with finger gestures and therefore a lot of fun to work with. While it did work well, it often required some patience as colors, brush sizes, and also other changes are activated in a time-sensitive manner.

Challenges With The Leap Motion

The technology used by the Leap Motion Controller is its infancy and early adopters should tolerate a couple of shortcomings.

  • Inaccurate Input: I found it very hard to make accurate moves and so control my computer. This may be due to Leap Motion’s incredible precision, that's unmatched by my own, personal clumsy finger movements. Particularly the Touchless for Windows app was much more of a drag than a genuine help and I never was able to properly use The New York Times app.

  • Finger Detection: When I tried to point with one finger, the controller would often detect a second finger somewhere, it doesn't matter how well I attempted to hide the opposite fingers. My hand movements became very artificial and far from intuitive.

  • False Positive Malware Detection: Several with the apps I installed were flagged as malware by my antivirus program. Of course that’s an incorrect positive, but it’s worth being noted.

Tips For Better Working With The Controller

The Leap Motion controller comes with some default settings that you should customize for optimal results. In the system tray, search for the Leap Motion Controller icon and double-click it to file for Settings. If you ever have difficulty with your controller, you'll be able to switch to the Troubleshooting tab and consult the support material or run diagnostic testing.

There are many default settings you should to customize:

  • Enable Automatic Power Saving: When I worked while using Leap Motion controller, I remarked that it became pretty warm and my computer was more busy than usual. If this bothers you, you'll be able to enable automatic power saving, which reduces performance and conserves power anytime you can.

  • Change Interaction Height: The default is defined to 20cm, that is on the top quality. I enjoyed different heights plus the end selected automatic interaction height.

  • Tracking and Low Resource Mode: On my relatively new laptop, the Leap Motion worked perfectly. On an older machine, however, it froze and apps wouldn’t load. When I disabled tracking and enabled low resource mode (under Troubleshooting), it performed much better.

Leap Motion General Settings

The concept is amazing if it worked effortlessly, I would probably love my Leap Motion. Unfortunately, I had my challenges, that makes me believe this gadget still needs some serious work. In its current incarnation, it can be slightly cumbersome to use for any productive work. That said, I do believe this can be a next big thing and we will see touchless gesture detection like a standard feature in numerous devices soon. The games, however, are an enjoyable experience and I would ever guess they are great to maintain kids busy without finding yourself with smudged screens or keyboards.

What do you think in the Leap Motion? Are you wanting to try it immediately or can you rather wait until the technology has matured?
